From Asphalt to Green,  Care Grows Where Community Builds

Celebrating informal, community-driven care that transforms urban spaces through food, gardens, and solidarity.

In the heat-stressed heart of Berlin’s Wedding, a quiet revolution has taken root. Over the past five years, the Badstraße Kiez has transformed from a climate-vulnerable urban stretch into a living laboratory for climate resilience and community connection. Driven by a shared mission since 2019, residents, local organizations, and the Bezirksamt Mitte co-created a climate adaptation strategy, identifying and nurturing “Klimaoasen” (climate oases) across the neighborhood.

Through vibrant workshops, street talks, climate labs, and joyful street festivals, the community shaped a bold vision: turning asphalt into green havens. In 2022, the Bellermanngarten emerged, a thriving community garden on a formerly blocked stretch of Bellermannstraße, a symbol of urban renewal and collective care. A year later, the Eulerplatz was born: a temporary, multifunctional neighborhood square reimagining a car-dominated street into a shared space for play, gathering, and greenery. With hands-on building workshops, residents crafted raised beds, Kiez furniture, and even a clay oven, proving that community-driven design is the heart of sustainable urban change.

Our signature Klimaoasen brought climate action into the streets: two green mobile pods, bicycle trailers transformed into shaded, flower-filled meeting spots with seating and sun sails, roamed different parking spots, creating dynamic green oases in the urban fabric. Today, two beloved green spaces stand as living proof: the streets have become places of encounter, rest, and joy.
In Berlins KlimaKiez Caring structures were established through building trust, exchange knowledge, and collectively nurture both nature and relationships. These caring relations are rooted in participatory planning, intergenerational exchange, and the everyday acts of tending to soil, trees, and each other.
